Due to the COVID19 pandemic and its effects on the very notions of proximity and intimacy, the adult industry is facing new and increasingly tough challenges, being forced to a radical reconfiguration of its modes of production and to a profound reconceptualization of pornographic labor. In order to discuss the ways in which the current situation is affecting the world of adult entertainment and the lives of the people involved in it, the section will host a keynote by Lynn Comella.

Pandemic Porn Cultures: Reflections on Labor, Resistance, and Media Making in Uncertain Times

How has the coronavirus pandemic changed porn cultures? In this talk, I revisit my essay “Studying Porn Cultures” (2014) to reflect on issues of labor, resistance, and media making during an era of unprecedented work stoppages, economic hardship, and industry transformation. How has the adult industry, and those who labor within and alongside it, responded to these challenges, and what lessons might these responses offer for thinking about resilience and survival in uncertain times?
